The Law of Attraction: An Overview

As part of our 15-week Journey, we'll use the principles of the Law of Attraction to guide our actions. A brief explanation of these concepts will help you understand how this will work.

When someone talks about the Law of Attraction, does an image of some mystical, magical new-agey thing come to mind? For me, it did. But then I started reading about it, and I became intrigued.

As a newbie to understanding the Law of Attraction, I thought it would be helpful to put together a quick overview of what it is and how it works. This has helped me understand it better, and I hope it will do the same for you.

What Is the Law of Attraction?

Basically, the Law of Attraction can be described as a universal law - like gravity - that states that like attracts like. So, positive thoughts and feelings will attract positive outcomes, and negative thoughts and feelings will attract negative outcomes. The belief is that the Law of Attraction uses the power of the mind to attract into our lives whatever we focus on.

What does this mean?

Have you ever had one of those days where everything goes wrong? You feel down, defeated and convinced the world is against you, yet it seems that things just keep going wrong. That’s the Law of Attraction at work. Now think of a day where everything went well. The kids were on time, you got the choice parking space, and 5 people stopped to compliment you. You probably felt great, energized and hummed with a positive vibe all day long. Again, the Law of Attraction working its magic.

Actions, events and activities can impact our thoughts and feelings. That’s a universal truth hardly anyone would argue with. Now ask yourself if you believe the opposite - that our thoughts and feelings have an effect on what happens around us. It’s harder to believe, but it’s true! Our thoughts and feelings create a vibrational energy that radiates into the universe and can actually attract complementary energy and make things happen.

Sounds like hocus pocus, right? But it’s not.

Some Examples

If you have a Facebook account, then you’ve probably seen this experiment, where kids were asked to bully one plant and compliment another. While this hardly qualifies as an objective, scientific study, it does show profound effects. Over a period of 30 days, the bullied plant starts to wither and droop, while the other plant has thrived and grown. You can see it for yourself here, just be patient with the IKEA promotion up front (the experiment was sponsored by IKEA). It’s pretty amazing to physically see how positive thoughts and actions can bring positive results, and negative thoughts and actions bring negative results.

I also have a personal example from way before I even heard about the Law of Attraction. Shortly after I finished grad school, I took a trip with my sister and my cousin to Lake Tahoe. We hiked around the lake and then made our way to the casinos to have some lunch. As we walked through a couple of the casinos searching for the best deal, I kept hearing the sound of slot machines paying out piles of coins. You know, the classic ka-ching-ching-ching-ching ching sound. I felt that sound in my bones so much that I said to my sister, “I need to make that sound,” and I was dead serious. I physically NEEDED to make that sound.

I *needed* to make that sound!

We had lunch within earshot of the slot machines, and I kept saying, “I need to make that sound,” not because I was consciously manifesting money, but because the sound resonated in me. My sister thought I was nuts, but she seemed amused by my mini-obsession. Finally, on the way out of the casino, I stopped at a slot machine and put a couple quarters in because I HAD TO make that sound. And wouldn’t you know, I spun the wheel and that magical sound happened! That machine poured out $200 for me that day, and gave me a great story to tell. Was it the Law of Attraction at work? I think it was! How do I know this? Because I did it again in Vegas several years later!

Try It Yourself and See

For the next 15 weeks, Sandy and I will work with the Law of Attraction to help us achieve our dreams. And it WILL take work. After all, I had to put the quarters into the slot machine and pull the lever. Just thinking about making the noise wouldn’t have made it happen without some effort on my part. So we’ll put into practice some exercises and thought-changing techniques, some of which are explained in this article.

We encourage you to try it with us and share your progress as we share ours.

As the website TheLawofAttraction.com says,

The Law of Attraction is one of life’s biggest mysteries. Very few people are fully aware of how much of an impact the Law of Attraction has on their day to day life. Whether we are doing it knowingly or unknowingly, every second of our existence, we are acting as human magnets sending out our thoughts and emotions and attracting back more of what we have put out.

We’re determined to unlock our magnetic potential, and we want you to do so, too! How will you make this work in your life? Let us know in the comments below and/or by posting the Forum in the menu at the top of the page. We can’t wait to hear from you!
